Safety for Eye Protection

Since the human eye and face is the vital part of our body, its protection is also very necessary. People working in a risky area such as pressure washing, water blasting and sewer jetting can be exposed to great hazards causing danger to their eyes and face. Work related eye injuries make thousands of people blind each year and it could be prevented by proper safety for eye protection.

Eye injuries lead to a production-time, medical expenses and worker compensation loss of approximately $300 million per year. As safety for eye protection is a very personal product for the pressure washer workers, it not only has to provide protection but offer ease and style as well. It should be made sure that workers must have appropriate safety for eye protection if they are exposed to hazards like flying particles, chemicals, molten metal, gases and

potentially infected material. If people will not wear eye protection or have improper or poorly fitting eye protection, it will lead to many occupational eye injuries. So, it should be made sure that protection selected is protective enough and properly fits each worker that is exposed to the hazard.

Protection against hazards should not rely alone on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). It should be used with guards, engineering controls, and sound manufacturing practices. When machines present eye or face injury from physical, chemical, or radiation agents it is essential to wear eye and face protection equipments. Structural or optical defects equipments shall be prohibited. Limitation or precautions are to be strictly observed and transmitted to the user as indicated by the manufacturer. Employees exposed to laser beams should wear safety goggles to protect from specific wavelength of the laser. Operating an ultra high pressure equipment should wear proper water blaster safety eqipment that should include helmet, face shield, ear goggle, boots, protective suit aside from eye googles. For more safety armor, check Turtleskin protective equipment.

PRESCRIPTION LENSES:

As prescription lenses will not provide appropriate safety for eye protection against most occupational eye and face hazards, employees must wear eye protection over the prescription lenses. It should also be made sure that eye protection does not disturb the protective lenses so that the employee’s vision will not be inhibited.

EYE PROTECTION FOR EXPOSED AREA:

It has been suggested by the OSHA that safety for eye protection be routinely considered for carpenters, machinists, mechanics, plumbers, sheet-metal workers, pipefitters, etc. Eye and face should be protected from dust, dirt, woodchips, hot liquids, chains, tools, welding and harmful rays. During welding or cutting work helmets shall b used.

SELECTION OF SAFETY FOR EYE PROTECTION:

For selecting eye and face hazards one should keep in mind that it is protective enough for the workplace, is comfortable to wear, fits properly, is easy to clean and can be disinfected. Additionally, it should provide unrestricted vision. The labeling of goggles should be done containing laser wavelength, optical density of wavelength and visible light transmission.

All the eye and face protective devices must be in compliance with ANSI Z87.1-1989 or should be as effective as this standard requires. Protective eye wear should be disinfected after each use. Protective eyewear with corrective lenses should not be shared among employees.

There are several types of eye and face protections such as safety spectacles that are used to protect the eye from variety of hazards. It provides primary protection from impact to optical radiation. Goggles are another primary protector for eye protection while face shields are secondary protectors and should be worn only with primary protectors. Laser safety goggles provide protection from intense concentration of light produced by lasers.

For one’s own safety and also as per Health Safety and Environment (HSE) laws, it is a requirement that workers must wear eye and face protective when working in an area that presents an eye-injury or a face injury hazard.
